What is SprintDog™?
SprintDog™ is a 100-meter timed sprint where dogs run individually, either chasing a lure or running toward their owner. Unlike traditional racing, dogs compete against their own best times, earning points and titles based on their speed and performance. This means it’s all about fun, fitness, and personal bests!
Who Can Participate?
SprintDog™ is open to all breeds and all sizes—no need for previous experience! However, there are a few rules:
- Dogs must be at least 12 months old
- Dogs must be registered with Dogs Australia
- Handlers must be members of a Dogs Australia-affiliated club
- Only one handler can release the dog at the start line
How Does it Work?
Each SprintDog™ event consists of two runs:
- Run 1: Dogs sprint 100 meters, and their time is recorded.
- Run 2: Dogs complete a second 100-meter sprint.
- Their times are averaged to determine their final speed and points.
Dogs earn points based on their speed, which adds up over time to qualify for SprintDog™ titles—from Novice all the way to Champion!
The Sprint Zone & Safety Rules
To keep the event safe and fair, SprintDog™ trials have strict setup and safety measures:
- A straight, 100m track with fenced sides
- A lure system to encourage dogs to run their fastest
- A safe catching pen at the finish line where handlers can collect their dog
- No harsh training tools—only flat collars or no collar while running
- Temperature limits—races are postponed if it gets too hot
